Chey Caliso is an author and student at The University of Akron majoring in History and minoring in English. She writes books that reflect her version of the Asian American experience.
Book summaries:
In "My Filipino Parents' Worst Nightmare," Jaslene Dela Cruz breaks Filipino stereotypes as she is not a straight A student, is not religious, and cannot sing. Her mother hates her views and tries to change her to be more like Jaslene’s older sister, Amalia, but Jaslene’s rebellious personality causes major conflict in her family.
In "Understanding Asian Americans," Caliso sheds light on the normalization of Asian racism in the United States, citing jokes in popular culture and in everyday interactions, about Asian accents, names, and food. By diving into the history of the Asian American experience in the U.S. and sharing her own perspective, Caliso shows how inaccurate some portrayals of Asian Americans can be.
Caliso will discuss these two works, followed by a Q&A and book signing.
