Learn about Fly Fishing

Interested in learning about fly fishing? The library will be hosting a series of classes to teach the basics of fly fishing. Registration is required.

Mark Ferguson with Trout Unlimited will be teaching the basics of fly fishing. Trout Unlimited is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of freshwater streams, rivers, and associated upland habitats for trout, salmon, other aquatic species, and people.

April 11: Introduction into fly fishing - The introduction covers the basic methods of fly fishing and concepts behind each method. We will discuss some history of fly fishing and how it evolved into what we have today. Discuss the basic differences in the different methods of fly fishing along with the type of flies used.

April 18: Fly fishing methods, a two-part discussion - Part One: Discussions of dry fly fishing on the water's surface. This discussion will include the method along with the type of flies that would be used. We will also have a quick demonstration of methods for fly-tying a dry fly. Part Two: Discussions of sub-surface fly fishing using nymphs, eggs, and streamer flies. This discussion will include the method along with the type of flies that would be used below the water's surface. We will also have a quick demonstration of the methods of fly-tying for a wet fly.

April 25: (OPTIONAL) Introduction to casting a fly rod - An optional hands-on clinic where participants will cast into a river and be shown the basic overhead cast and descriptions of other possible methods. Rods will be available for participants who don't have their own. Participants attending the casting clinic are expected to have attended the other fly fishing classes.

The April 25 clinic will be held at Water Works City Park, located at 2025 Munroe Falls Ave, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221. Attendees assume all responsibility for participation in this optional event.
