The Akron Griot Project invites you to pull up a chair and join the circle. This free three-part storytelling workshop series is designed for youth, elders, and community members who believe in the power of stories to heal, teach, and connect.

Over three 90-minute gatherings, participants will explore why every voice matters ("Ignite Your Story"), learn how to turn lived experiences into powerful narratives ("Bring It to Life"), and gain simple tools to preserve their memories for generations to come ("Record Your Story"). Whether you’re sharing your journey for the first time or looking to pass on wisdom, this is a space where stories live on — and everyone has a seat in the circle.

The Akron Griot Project is a multigenerational cultural initiative led by Akron natives Ebony and Kwa Hill. It is rooted in the belief that our elders are living libraries and stories are sacred. Inspired by the African proverb, “When an elder dies, a library burns,” the project uplifts the voices of community elders, connects them with youth, and preserves their wisdom through live events, oral recordings, and digital storytelling.

About the branch

The Maple Valley Branch Library is a key component of a neighborhood that finds a welcoming community gathering place within its walls. Artwork features local artists Debra Calhoun, Melissa Daubert, and the late Miller Horns, and a plaque pays tribute to poet and Maple Valley childhood customer Rita Dove. Rich book, movie, and music collections celebrate, among other genres, the extensive contribution of African-Americans to the arts, literature. In addition, the library is a hub of activity that ranges from computers and computer classes, WiFi, printing, copying, scanning and faxing, to hundreds of programs for all ages on themes as diverse as local history, book discussions, crafting, storytelling, homework help, and more.

Local non-profit groups meet at the Maple Valley Branch Library frequently, and Library staff can be found participating in events at local schools and as participants in community organizations working toward neighborhood success. Maple Valley Branch Library is the one-stop spot for education, creativity, and entertainment to suit all interests.
